Jute Fiber in Concrete: Comprehensive Review of Workability and Strength Characteristics
Abstract
Reinforcing fibers, especially natural ones, are relatively cheaper and easily available in the market, making them ideal for enhancing concrete properties. In several publications, including original papers and reviews, it was found that adding jute fibers (JTF) to concrete improves its properties. This review aims to present the impact of JTF on the fresh properties and strength characteristics of concrete to pave the way for future utilizations. The evidence therefore supports the idea that the maximum level of content within JTFs should be 0.10% in volume, to improve the compressive, tensile, and flexural strength but a high percentage of fiber content may hamper the workability and performance due to increased porosity. Also, alkali treatment enhances the fiber-matrix bond, thus enhancing the flexural strength of the composite. The review also points out the need to strike the right dosage and treatment of fiber to capture the benefits of concrete reinforced with JTF as a sustainable construction material.
