Abstract

This research entails the design and performance enhancement of a grain (rice) husk removal machine using locally sourced materials. This contamination adversely impacts the marketability and consumer acceptance, even though the country has the potential to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production. Conventional grain husk and impurity removal methods have fallen short, necessitating a more effective processing solution. This study introduces and designs an innovative rice husk removal machine, aimed at enhancing the purity of rice and ensuring it is market-ready. A distinguishing feature of this study is the integration of an optimized separation flow model, deliberate choice of component, and an evaluation of food safety all of which guarantee superior operational effectiveness. The machine is engineered to differentiate rice from impurities by utilizing the variations in particle size and density, resulting in a more reliable and efficient cleaning process. A 1-horsepower electric motor was incorporated into the design. Following five rounds of testing and optimization, the machine demonstrated an impurity removal rate of 86.6% and a husk removal rate of 93.1%, with the ability to process 150 kg/hr. These findings underscore a considerable advancement compared to conventional techniques, making this machine suitable for extensive rice processing. This study tackles a significant challenge within Nigeria’s rice sector by presenting a viable solution to contamination issues. By improving impurity extraction and optimizing the dehusking process, it fosters food safety, minimizes post-harvest losses, and elevates rice quality. Additionally, the outcome provides meaningful insights into large-scale rice processing, aiding the enhancement of Nigeria’s agricultural industry and bolstering food security and economic stability. This husk removal machine has proven to be both efficient and budget-friendly for farmers.
