Abstract

Hypertension, a leading cause of global mortality (17.9 million deaths annually, 19% per GBD 2025), poses a major challenge in India, where CVD mortality has risen 31% in 25 years. This quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest study assessed beetroot juice’s effectiveness in reducing blood pressure among 30 hypertensive women (aged 40-60) in Shaktinagar, Mangaluru, selected via purposive sampling. Participants consumed 200 ml daily for 15 days before breakfast. Systolic blood pressure shifted from severe (47%) and moderate (36.6%) pre-intervention (mean 176.6 mmHg) to mild (53.3%) and normal (26.6%) post-intervention (mean 146.8 mmHg; t(29) =6.70, p≤0.05). Diastolic pressure improved from severe (40%) and moderate (50%) (mean 106.4 mmHg) to mild (46.6%) and normal (33.3%) (mean 88.6 mmHg; t(29) =6.61, p≤0.05). No significant pre-test associations existed with most demographics, except anti-hypertensive treatment years, exercise, and diet for systolic/diastolic BP. Beetroot juice significantly lowered blood pressure, supporting its role as an adjunctive lifestyle intervention.
