Introduction: The essential function of nurses in healthcare systems highlights the need to better explore their psychological well-being, which significantly impacts performance and satisfaction. Developing assertiveness and psychological empowerment is crucial for nurses, as these attributes are fundamental to making sound decisions and advocating effectively for patients.
Aim: The study sought to investigate the correlation between assertiveness and psychological empowerment among nursing students.
Methodology: A cross-sectional and correlational design was employed, utilizing a random sampling method to recruit 100 Indian nursing students. Assertiveness was measured using the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule, while Spreitzer's Psychological Empowerment Scale assessed psychological empowerment. Data analysis involved the application of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: The average age of the cohort was 20.4 years (SD = 1.7). The majority of the study participants (n=71, 71%) were females, compared to males (n=29, 29%). Most nursing students exhibited low assertiveness (51%), which negatively impacted their psychological empowerment (M = 4.45, SD = 0.95). Findings demonstrated that there is a significant correlation between assertiveness and psychological empowerment (p<0.05).
Conclusion: A significant number of nursing students in Tripura lack both psychological empowerment and assertiveness. Fostering assertiveness and psychological empowerment in nursing students directly enhances their learning and prepares them to transition into competent professional nurses. These findings suggest a critical need for nurse educators to develop targeted programs to improve these key professional competencies.
