Abstract

Background: Effective nursing personnel allocation is crucial for ensuring optimal patient care, maintaining nurse well-being, and minimizing operational inefficiencies in healthcare settings. The Nursing Allocation and Efficiency Tool (NEAT) was introduced to streamline staffing levels, improve nurse-patient ratios, and enhance overall hospital efficiency. This study evaluates the impact of NEAT on nursing personnel utilization, patient safety, staff satisfaction, and patient outcomes over a six-month period.

Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed to assess the effectiveness of NEAT in a single hospital. Quantitative data, including Nurse-Patient Ratios (NPR), absenteeism rates, double duties, incident rates, patient satisfaction scores, and staff satisfaction levels, were collected monthly from January to June 2024. The study utilized correlation and regression analyses to determine relationships between staffing levels, absenteeism, and patient outcomes.

Results: The implementation of NEAT led to a significant reduction in absenteeism and double duties, with nurse-patient ratios consistently maintained within acceptable thresholds (1:6 for wards and 1:1.2 for ICUs). Notably, incident rates decreased from 8% in January to 3% in June, indicating improved patient safety. Patient satisfaction scores increased from an average of 3.8 in January to 4.5 in June, and overall patient satisfaction, measured by the Medblaze app, rose from 83% to 97.5% over the study period. Similarly, staff satisfaction with workload management, job satisfaction, and tool usability showed positive trends, with over 90% of nursing staff reporting satisfaction with NEAT’s functionality.

Conclusions: The findings suggest that NEAT is an effective tool for optimizing nursing staff allocation, enhancing patient safety, and improving both patient and staff satisfaction. The positive correlation between staffing improvements and patient outcomes highlights the importance of adequate nurse staffing in delivering high-quality care. The tool also appears to reduce workload stress and improve job satisfaction among nursing staff, which is essential for nurse retention and overall healthcare efficiency. However, further research is needed to evaluate NEAT's effectiveness in diverse hospital settings and to explore its scalability across larger healthcare networks.
