Abstract

Objective: To estimate the frequency of open-air defecation and the level of knowledge about using sanitary latrines in rural areas of Chamarajanagar district.

Methodology: A community-based descriptive study using knowledge questionnaires on open-air defecation awareness and demographic performance assessments.180 families are chosen at random from among them. A single household member is interviewed using a structured questionnaire.

Results: In most participating parts (128), a sanitary toilet was present in 71% of the homes, while 29% of the study area's residents defecated outside. Approximately 64% of participants were unaware that open defecation can spread disease.

Conclusion: Despite having latrines in their homes, most people do not use them and are unaware of how diseases spread. An awareness effort about the spread of disease is needed in this area.
