Abstract

Background: This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and attitude regarding using menstrual cups among undergraduate students in selected colleges in Wayanad. The objectives were to evaluate the level of expertise regarding menstrual cups, to assess the attitude towards their use, to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching program on knowledge and attitude, and to identify the association between pre-test knowledge of menstrual cups and selected demographic variables among undergraduate students. Some studies mentioned that women generate around 14.1 kg of non-biodegradable waste in a lifetime while using commercially manufactured disposable sanitary pads. On the other hand, while using a menstrual cup, she generates .06kg of non-biodegradable trash. Also, around 1.8 billion people menstruate yearly; we can estimate the amount of waste they produce in a month. Through this study, we aim to assess their attitude and knowledge regarding menstrual cups among undergraduate students in selected colleges in Wayanad. Methods: A pre-experimental research design, one-group pre-test, and post-test research design were employed. The study was conducted at Pazhassiraja College, Wayanad, with a sample size of 200 students selected using a convenient sampling technique. Data were collected using a demographic proforma with nine items, a knowledge questionnaire with 15 self-administered questions, and an attitude checklist with 20 questions. Pre-test data were collected, followed by a structured teaching program about menstrual cups. The post-test was conducted one week later. Results: Data analysis using descriptive statistics indicated that the knowledge and attitude levels of the subjects significantly increased after the structured teaching program (p < 0.001). Additionally, a significant association was found between pre-test knowledge and monthly expenditure on sanitary products. Conclusion: The structured teaching program effectively enhanced knowledge and attitudes towards menstrual cups among undergraduate students, fulfilling the study's objectives.
