Abstract

Background: Global research that identifies obesity as a primary risk factor for T2D, with overweight individuals exhibiting a markedly increased risk of developing the condition. Methodology: A study used descriptive cross sectional research design. A total of 153 subjects were selected using convenience sampling, a non-probability technique chosen to target individuals meeting the inclusion criteria. The general public aged between 20 and 65 years and willing to participate were included in the study. Participants already diagnosed with diabetes and children were excluded from the study. Results: The prevalence of diabetes risk factors showed that 45.8% of the male participants below 35 years had low risk while 41.7% had moderate risk and 12.5% high risk. Among the 35-49 years of age, 6.7% are at low risk, 70.8% at moderate risk and 22.5% at high risk. In the male participants above 50 years, 58.3 % of them were at high risk. Conclusion: The study concluded that the participants have a fairly good knowledge of diabetes, which is encouraging for future diabetes control and prevention. However, the risk factors for diabetes show alarming signs with the increasing age and low level of physical activity.
