Background: Alcoholism poses a significant threat to both individuals and society, with families often bearing the most significant burden of its impact. Alcohol Dependence Syndrome (ADS) is characterized by a maladaptive pattern of alcohol use, leading to substantial impairment and distress. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the level of family burden experienced by caregivers of individuals with ADS and to explore its association with selected baseline variables. Research design: A quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional design was employed, and the method was purposive sampling to select participants. Data collection method: After obtaining administrative and ethical permission, a subject information sheet was given, and informed consent was obtained in their vernacular language. Data were collected using a structured tool that assessed baseline variables and family burden through the Family Burden Interview Schedule. Results: Mean and standard deviation have been used to explain family burden among caregivers. Inferential statistics like Fisher's exact test and t-test were used to find out the association of the family burden of the caregiver with selected baseline variables. There is a significant association between family burden and a family history of alcoholism (p < 0.00). Conclusion: These findings highlight the substantial impact of ADS on caregivers and emphasize the need for targeted interventions. This study underscores the critical role of family history in exacerbating the burden experienced by caregivers.
