Abstract

Diabetes is a most prevailing non-communicable global problem. Lack of knowledge about home care among diabetes patients is leading to many complications. Diabetes education plays a major role in imparting knowledge about self-care at home and contributes to raising the standard of living. The study's objective was to ascertain the knowledge of patient with diabetes on home care as measured by a structured knowledge questionnaire and to evaluate the efficacy of a self-instructional module on home care of patients with diabetes. A one-group test post-test evaluative approach among 50 participants selected utilizing a convenient sampling technique was conducted at Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore. The mean post-test score ranged from 36 - 64 and that of the pretest ranged from 24 - 44. The actual mean percentage gain in knowledge (25%) was seen in the area of complications and prevention. The mean difference between post-test and pretest knowledge school was significant with t=12.6. A substantial association (x2 = 7.17) was found between the patient's knowledge and their exposure to the media. The patient's knowledge and their age, sex, education level, or length of illness did not significantly associate. The researcher concluded that the self-instructional module had a positive influence on individuals with diabetes' understanding of at-home care.
