Abstract

Heating and cooling systems are among the largest energy consumers in residential and commercial spaces, often leading to unnecessary energy wastage due to inefficient operation. This project presents an IoT-based smart thermostat designed to optimize energy consumption by automatically regulating temperature control systems based on real-time environmental conditions. The system integrates temperature sensors (DHT22, LM35) to monitor ambient temperature and microcontrollers (ESP32, Arduino) to process data and trigger appropriate heating or cooling actions via a relay module. The software is developed using C++ and Python, utilizing Arduino IDE and ESP32 firmware for real-time data acquisition, processing, and control. The system reads temperature data at regular intervals, compares it with predefined thresholds, and activates or deactivates the heating or cooling devices accordingly. The relay-based control mechanism ensures efficient energy utilization while maintaining optimal indoor comfort levels. Additionally, the IoT capabilities of the ESP32 allow remote monitoring and control, enhancing user convenience and accessibility. By dynamically adjusting energy usage based on temperature variations, this smart thermostat significantly reduces electricity consumption and operational costs. The system is designed to be simple, scalable, and adaptable, making it suitable for home automation, office spaces, and industrial environments. Future enhancements may include integrating machine learning algorithms for predictive temperature control, further improving energy efficiency. This project demonstrates the potential of IoT-driven energy management solutions in promoting sustainable and smart living.
