Rapid urbanization brings challenges in resource management, sustainability, and green services. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are emerging as a solution in smart city initiatives. This paper explores how diverse IoT applications address these challenges and improve citizen well-being. We employ a comprehensive literature review, surveys, case studies, simulations, and data analysis to investigate the impact of IoT. Our findings show that IoT implementation in smart cities improves performance and resource management through real-time data collection and analysis. IoT-enabled systems optimize transportation networks, reduce energy consumption, and streamline waste management.
Additionally, they offer personalized and responsive public services like smart healthcare, parking, and public transportation. Surveillance systems, emergency response optimization, and predictive analytics also benefit public safety and security. Furthermore, IoT plays a crucial role in sustainability by monitoring air quality, managing water resources, and facilitating the transition to renewable energy. However, robust data privacy and security measures are essential to protect citizens' information. Future research should focus on interdisciplinary collaboration to address complex socio-technical challenges. Continued innovation and pilot projects are vital to scaling IoT solutions and realizing the full potential of smart cities in fostering sustainable urban development. This paper highlights the transformative impact of IoT in shaping the future of smart cities. It emphasizes the importance of strategic planning and stakeholder engagement to achieve resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban environments.
