Model predictive control (MPC) has emerged as a powerful control methodology in power electronics due to its predictive capabilities, flexibility, and constraint-handling features. With the evolution of modern power electronic architectures ranging from multilevel converters to smart grid interfaces the demand for sophisticated control strategies has grown. This article presents a comprehensive and novel perspective on integrating MPC into modern power electronics, focusing on system modeling, control objectives, computational considerations, and implementation challenges. Furthermore, it explores advanced topics such as nonlinear MPC, hybrid systems, and AI-aided predictive control, aiming to provide a holistic foundation for researchers and engineers.
