Abstract

This paper presents a fault analysis and over-current relay protection scheme for power systems implemented through MATLAB simulation. The primary objective is to investigate the effectiveness of over-current relays in detecting and isolating faults in a power distribution network, ensuring system stability and reliability. The simulation includes various fault scenarios, such as short-circuits faults, and analyzes the performance of the over-current relay under different fault conditions. The fault detection process is modeled using MATLAB/Simulink, and the corresponding relay settings are optimized to minimize system damage and downtime. Simulation results demonstrate the impact of fault location, fault type, and relay settings on protection performance. The paper also compares relay characteristics, highlighting the trade-offs between sensitivity and selectivity. The findings indicate that proper coordination over current relays significantly enhances the protection system's responsiveness, making it an essential tool for safeguarding power networks.
